Grand Prairie is located in mid-cities region of Texas and is part of three counties: Ellis, Tarrant and Dallas. It is currently the 15th largest city within the state of Texas with a population of 175,396.
Grand Prairie City is conveniently located in between the larger cities of Fort Worth and Dallas. Fort Worth is situated fifteen miles towards the west, whereas the city of Dallas is only 12 miles east of downtown. Just five minutes north of Grand Prairie, is the DFW International Airport. The Interstate 30, Interstate 20, Loop 12, Spur 303 and State Highway 360 are easily accessible from Grand Prairie City, allowing residents access to almost anywhere in the state of Texas. Presently being built is a ten mile extension of State Highway 161 to Interstate 20. Its expected completion date is in 2012. When completed, it will connect with east-west freeways between Fort Worth City and the city of Dallas, such as the State Highway 183, Interstate 20, and Interstate 30.
There are 58 parks in Grand Prairie City totaling an area of around 5,000 acres. In these parks are five softball and baseball complexes, a senior centre, five public swimming pools, 32 tennis courts, 18 soccer fields, two beaches on Joe Pool Lake and a campground. The city has some competitive athletic programs.
1/4 sales tax which the city of Grand Prairie has established has been put towards park improvements. With this $125 million, 20-year plan Grand Prairie aims to improve each park while continuing to expand and add more park land.
While Grand Prairie City does offer several private golf courses and a county club Grand Prairie also has two affordable and remarkable public golf courses. Tangle Ridge is renowned for its bentgrass greens and Hill Country atmosphere. The biggest practice putting green within Texas State can be found at Prairie lakes, that has one of the very best golf values in the region.
As of 2008, Grand Prairie's leading companies are: Grand Prairie Independent School District, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control, Poly-America, Inc., Bell Helicopter-Textron, Lone Star Park at Grand Prairie, City of Grand Prairie and Vought Aircraft Industries.
The well-known amusement park Six Flags runs its corporate office within the city of grand Prairie. The head office for American Eurocopter is also located in Grand Prairie City.
American Airlines decided to relocate from New York City to the Dallas/Fort Worth area in 1978. They moved their headquarters into two leased office buildings in Grand Prairie. The move to Fort Worth was completed when the airline left its Grand Prairie facility on the 17th of January, the year 1983.
