Wichita Falls is situated approximately one hundred twenty miles northwest of Dallas within north-central Texas. The Oklahoma borders lies around 15 miles north. The city is serviced by lots of highways, such as Routes 281, 287, 82 and 277, the Texas State Highways 79 and 240 and the Interstate I-44. It is the county seat of Wichita County and is considered the primary transportation centre of North Texas.
The city was first established in the mid-1800s. Soon after, the arrival of the very first trail during 1882 brought an influx of settlers to the region. A lumberyard was quickly constructed as was a general merchandise store. The arrival of more railroads stimulated the economy and Wichita Falls quickly became a transportation and supply center for northwest Texas and southern Oklahoma. It was incorporated during the year 1889. Oil became increasingly more prominent and soon became the main economic focus of the city of Wichita Falls. The North Texas Fields were producing 46 percent of the states oil supply by 1913. The Great Depression slowed the building boom created by the economic prosperity. The Sheppard Field, an Army Air Corps training facility, was established in 1941. It later became the Sheppard Air Force Base.
The city of Wichita Falls was almost destroyed by one of the largest tornadoes in history in the 10th of April, 1979. Lots of houses and business establishments were destroyed. Thankfully the city was able to make a fast recovery. In just a few short years the majority of the damage was repaired.
All over the city of Wichita Falls are a large assortment of locations and attractions of interest, including: Wichita Falls Railroad Museum, The Kell House Museum, and Wichita Falls Museum and Arts Center. These are just a few of the area's notable museums. There are also some performing arts facilities, such as the Wichita Ballet Theatre, the Wichita Falls Symphony and the Backdoor Theatre.
One of the cities professional sports teams is the Wichita Falls Wildcats. They are a professional ice hockey team that is part of the North American Hockey League. The Wichita Falls Drillers is one more sports team from Wichita, who have recently won a Minor League Football national championship.
The Sheppard Air Force Base is the biggest business within the city of Wichita Falls. Boeing and Lear Sigler Services, Inc., provides services for the base. The Allred Unit, a medium and maximum security prison is another one of the city's biggest companies. The economy is mainly made up of agriculture, healthcare, educational services, along with defense and aerospace businesses.
Within the city, there are some major manufacturers, like: PPG, Inc., Alcoa Howmet, Magic Aire, WashEX, and St, Gobain Vertrotex. The leading areas of employment in Wichita Falls are educational services, healthcare, government, construction, accommodation and food services. Approximately 28% of the workforce is involved with professional, management, and related occupations, 24 percent in sales and office occupations, and 20 percent in service occupations.
